Lydia Ko

Club and District - Gulf Harbour G.C, North Harbour

Handicap -  + 5.8

Age started playing - 5

What made you begin playing golf? On the way back from visiting aunt’s family in Australia, I got a kid’s 7 iron and a putter for a present. Dad took me to a driving range and people loved to watch a little girl hitting balls. I loved to hit balls and do putting comps with adults.

Favourite course? Pupuke and  Gulf Harbour

Coach? Guy Wilson – Institute of Golf –  Coached me since I started golf.

Hours practice per week? 30 hours

Most spectacular shot? When I was 8 in the u19’s at Pakaranga I had to hit a 60 degree wedge over the huge tree. This was miracle shot and at that point I didn’t think it was going to work. To my surprise it finished 3 foot to the pin and I made a great par.

Golf player most admired? Michelle Wie

Most satisfying golf moment? Winning North Island Championship in 2009 – first big national event win.

What is the best thing about golf? Meeting new people,  enjoying competitions against different ages,  concentrating on games, seeing hard work pay off.

Best golfing tip - To be the best you have to work the hardest.

Strongest part of your game? Driver, I hit nearly every fairway, and my focus. I have to work hard, which sometimes can be boring but the end result makes me smile.

Your best ever tournament result? NZ women’s open 7th in 2010

Tournament wins in 2010 - NZ Under 23's, NH Secondary School Champs, North Shore Classic, Wairakei Open, Grange Open, Player of tournament at Toro Interprovincials.
